Lionel #167 whistle controller diode conversion
Posted by T Norm on Sunday, January 20, 2019 9:27 AM

Has anyone installed a diode in a 167 whistle/direction controller? I tried to install a 6A10 general duty fast response diode and when wired-in the converted #167 no power went to the track from my Type Z transformer. The process I followed included:  removed the old disk rectifier first along with the shunt / wire resistor. Using the labelling scheme in the Lionel Repair Manual I soldered the cathode end of the diode to Contact C and the anode end to wire coming from the choke coil. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Oopps. Never mind I figured out my mistake. I should have left the steel plate in place that hold the disk rectifier. The plate connects to the wire terminal. That is why I had an open circuit. Works awesome now with a diode. No reversed e-unit or stalled train. My #167 whistle controller is cooler as is was warm to the touch with the disk rectifier.
