LETS HAVE A VOTE : Whats better, HO or O?
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, December 30, 2004 3:40 PM
What do you guys like better, HO or O? I used to like HO but got annoying with the stupid couplers on the rails and etc.

O has operating whistles, electric couplers, bell sounds and all that cool stuff.

I VOTE FOR O GAUGE ! ! ! ! !

O!
It's nice to have trains that I can spend 10 minutes setting up and have them go around the track over and over again. With HO, it was 30 minutes to set up the same thing, only to have the train de-rail or stall and sputter halfway around the loop.

I was in N for 8 years, HO for 10 years and now O for 20 years. They all have their advantages N for apartment, HO for kitbashing, etc and now that I am older 0 as I have the room, 24' X 12 and can;t see as well as it did when I was in N scale. 22 inch radius= 044 was nice to watch my Bachmann N norhtern run fine in etc. Also 100 car ore trains in HO now the beautiful 3rd rail scale engines and sound and gradually getting converted to Lionel Command is the thing for me.

Kinda like asking someone which is your favorite child.
Each has it's own attributes but as Dave so tactfully put it, for us old farts "O" is a whole bunch easier to see and handle. [(-D]
Add in all the bells and whistles it makes them a real hoot to play with as opposed to "Operating". [swg]

That's like saying "Which is better - Coke or Pepsi?" A question that can't be answered objectively.

I've got HO and O scale layouts, and I like the different scales for different reasons. O scale has all the bells and whistles, while HO lets me run more realistic trains.

BigJon - I'm surprised you don't have a figure of her on your layout...(wink)
Small Layouts are cool! Low post counts are even more cool! NO GRITS in my pot!!!

I have done both. If you like to play with trains and the operating accessories, you will go with O.

I like 0 but H0 has some advantages, and H0 seems to be quickly catching on to the bells and whistles. I'd be surprised to see many votes for H0 on this mostly 0 gauge forum. It is like preaching to the choir but in the end we can say yeah, we won, and that is what it is about. Yippee!

I'll give a sympathy vote to the H0 guys.

This is a hard question to answer, because I originally was in HO, then
moved to O Scale. As Dave said, for us older "farts" O Scale is EASIER
to see than the HO. [:D]

What's better, HO or O?

Depends on your age, and your eyesight. If you're from 12 to 30, 35, HO is
fine. But if you're older than 35, you need the bigger scale so you can
see what you're doing. When locomutt and I got married 17 3/4 years ago,
he was 34. Now that he's 54, both of us are glad that he had already
switched from HO to O Scale before we even met. He's now been in
O Scale since 1975.

I have to go with the "O" gauge. It looks and sounds so much more real and authentic when running on the track. Also, when displaying them on the shelf they look fantastic and you can see all the details better. They are just more fun!

Why in the world would someone post this question on the CTT Forum? We are talking Classic Toy Trains here, the majority of which are O-gauge, so of course the vote will be in favor of O!

I have run both O and HO. I think the on board sound and engine control gives O the edge. With O27 engines, a kid (or a clumsy adult) can play with them and only the whistles and bells will get broken. Therefor I vote here and with my train dollars for O.

The currious thing is most Hobby shops in Houston stock more HO and N than O. So while we all prefer O, obviously many folks out their prefer HO.

How about a dual layout. Then you can have your O gauge with a realistic train used as a small model train like at a park or zoo in some towns. Best of both worlds, and totally cool.

I've had LGB, h0, N and Z scale, but now I'm stuck to 0. The LGB is too big to have in a normal dutch house and in the garden the rails had to be cleaned from leaves and stuff before I could run. The h0 is a good option, but I miss the sight. It's a bit too small to get you impressed. N is great to build in a cupboard, but derailments and very sensitive operation destroy's the pleasure. Z is a gimmick.
0 has image, a locomotive impresses by sight and operation even without a landscape to drive in. It's easy to set up, doesn't derail (usually) and runs very good, no matter if the tracks are old or new. My vote goes to 0, and the second place to h0.

Being the toy train forum which is domitated by O gaugers, O gauge will get the most votes here. I like O gauge best but build HO kits too.

As a fifty three year old I find the O guage so much easier to "play "with. The size, the colors, the detail this is hard to not only get but see in Ho. Hope everyone has a happy new year.
