In attempting to repair a AF 630 lighted caboose I need to remove the top from the base to solder a wire. I notice each corner of the base has a small brass rivet holding the top on. Am I assessing this wrong or is there an easy way to get the top off to repair the unit? Its an old model with the latch couplers with the brass knob. Its supposed to have an interior light that I'm trying to repair. Thanks for any ideas
The base should be held onto the shell with four brass push pins. One way to get these out is to warm the pins with a soldering iron to slightly soften the plastic. They can then usually be pulled out with long nose pliers without breaking the plastic mounts.
Some of the Cabooses such as AFL 24636 have a hole at the base of the front and rear doors. Metal can be seen when looking through this hole. This represents a turned up metal tab from the chassis. You need to tap this tab gently with a punch to push it inward which will allow the plastic cab to be removed from the metal chassis. I use this technique to add on board lighting to S Scale Cabooses. Bend the tab back when reasembling.
