hi all, I have a U36b (I think) engine that needs new traction tires. I have the tires, but can’t for the life of me figure out how to remove the side frame of the truck to get access to the tires. This thread was helpful, but didn’t really give the detail I needed to remove the side frame. Any tips? Thanks in advance. http://cs.trains.com/ctt/f/95/t/215286.aspx
I know what you mean. I have an MPC CN GP-7 and I couldn't figure it out either. I ended up getting a new tire sqeezed between the truck frame and the wheel and finagled it onto the wheel with a bent paper clip and a pair of tweezers.
Trains, trains, wonderful trains. The more you get, the more you toot!
That worked for me when I had to do it.
The truck side frames are permanently staked to the motor frame.Using small tools like a dental pick is the proper way to replace tires.

Thanks all. That’s really a poor design.
Jdt141...That’s really a poor design.
It's been that same design since 1962. The stamped 600 series motors(which the U-36B truck is almost identical to) introduced in 1955 were a marked cheapening of the Lionel power truck design, and the introduction of the rubber traction tires in 1962 furthered that decline.
