Lionel no. 60 trolley runs in one direction
Posted by KeithL on Friday, November 2, 2018 11:23 AM

All the sudden, my Lionel no. 60 trolley developed the problem of running in only one direction.

To try to diagnose the problem, I put one test lead on the rollers and the other test lead on each of the contact plate terminals, one at a time. The motor runs only when a lead is connected to one of the contact plate terminals. This suggests a break in one of the field coils.

On the other hand, I used my multimeter to check continuity on each coil by putting one probe on the brush holder terminal that has the field wires attached, and the other on each of the two slide plate terminals, again, one at a time. There was continuity in both cases. If there is a break in one of the field coils, how could there be continuity in both cases?

There is also continuity between the other brush holder terminal and each of the slide plate terminals. Should there be?

I'm puzzled.
