A frosty topic
Posted by FJ and G on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 8:04 AM
So far, it's snowed north and south of us, but that hasn't kept Jack Frost from layering the fields with a thin white coating of ice that lasts a few hours each morning.

Until recently, I've never seen frost (without any snow) modeled. Chugman and others modeling the Midwest, you might want to take note.
If you can get your hands on a Jan05 Model Railroader (should still be in stores), turn to page 127 and see the Monon F3s pulling the Thoroughbred through the countryside near Bloomington IND. The fields are covered with frost and the trees are bare of leaves.

It is the single most realistic photo of a model I've ever seen, and sort of reminds me of Will's diorama of the winter scene PRR milk train.
Lance Mindheim of Silver Sprgs MD took the photo; and it's a layout, not a diorama.

I may send an email to MR asking how the effect of frost was done. Perhaps spraying matte medium?
