New Atlas RS1

I just got a new atlas rs one with TA sound and eob. My other earlier atlas does not have eob. I turned off the cruse mode and it is just like the other one in the 32 step control mode.
I put them both on the track and hit the 18 volt button, then eng 1 and aux 1 and they both fired up great. the only thing the older one did not smoke and made a ticking sound in the engine idle. I pushed the 0 rest and the ticking stopped and pushed the number 9 button to get smoke and all is cool.
If I power up the older TA engine without the new one on the track, it works fine .
What is going on with the two units.
I also tried a lashup doing exactly what it says in the lionel command book and it didn;t work.
Are these two units not fully compatable.

I apologize if I am asking the obvious here - but to be sure:

Do both units work individually?

You assigned unique eng ID numbers to each RS1?
