Prewar locomotives tend to want as much as 24 volts, while modern ones are happy with 16 or 18 or so. There is no harm in trying it out to see if it moves reasonably fast on whatever your transformer delivers.

My son just received my grandfathers Lionel no. 269e freight train set which has the no.261e locomotive. We have a TECH II Trainpower 027 transformer. Will this transformer work with are old train?

Thanks in advance.
