I think individual collectors may have the knowledge you are looking for, but it has not been published to my knowledge.
Your only other option, would be to search the on-line TCA Quarterlies, provided you are a member. I once read through 45 years worth of issues looking for American Flyer prewar articles. I found some good information that way.

Thank you for the responces. I have read the books mentioned. I was wondering if
anyone had done an in depth study like Bruce Greenberg is currently doing with
Lionel.
Greenberg's published a book called "Early American Toy Trains", which profiles Carlisle & Finch, Hafner, & Dorfan trains. The Dorfan section is about 60 pages long and covers O gauge, Standard Gauge, and Accessories and has lots of good descriptive information and photos.
The ones I have are the O'Brien's Collecting Toy Trains books by Krause publishing. I have volumes 3, 4 & 5, but there's a 6th edition out now.
Trains, trains, wonderful trains. The more you get, the more you toot!
Does anyone know of any books about Dorfan/Fandor trains?
