AF information
Posted by Waynestrains on Saturday, April 28, 2018 12:48 PM

I am asking for some informational help from the American Flyer people on the forum. Recently I bought a large box of AF items most of which, although not knowlegible about AF, I at least am familiar with. One item stumps me. It is a transformer number 1282. All AF material I have doesn't list it or on line I found no info. I did see one for sale on line but it had no info about date or anything. The fact that the label says Chicago, Il makes me think maybe pre-war.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am trying to become more familiar with AF.   Thanks       Wayne

Wayne,

Your question made me do some hunting through my Flyer catalogs.

The #1282 transformer is indeed prewar.  All of American Flyer's transformers that were produced during the Chicago era were numbered in the 12XX range.

The #1282 was cataloged for only 1 year, 1937, and appeared in this catalog

As you can see from page 4 it had a new feature, the automatic cutout.

The transition to Gilbert occured in 1938 and the #1282 - 75 watt transformer became Gilbert's #7 -75 watt transformer.  So that number (1282) only appeared in the American Flyer catalog for one year (1937).

I hope this is the information you were looking for.

So, what other goodies did you get in that box?

Thanks a lot for your answer and great explanation. As to the other goodies they were all what I generally would consider the usual. Aside from a couple of lionels all the others were S gauge AF I think from the 50s. 322 Engine/tender - 904/905/924/941 cars. Lots of track and I think 720 switch.

One oddball was a lionel milk car glued to a cast metal flatcar with AF trucks/couplers.

That's pretty much it and thanks again for your help.    Wayne
