I have a 455 Lionel Oil Rig from my brother-in-law to try and get working again. Basically all it did was smoke, which isn't a feature. I isolated each of the components. I checked the light and it works fine. I checked the solenoid and it works as well. That leaves the thermostat strip. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot that? I'm at a loss on how to best test and determine if it is functioning or not. Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
The thermostat strip is a bi-metallic heat sensitive switch. When current passes through it in the normally closed state, it heats up and the contacts open. When it cools in a few moments, the contacts close again.

Unless it's important to you to keep it original order a circuit board from one of the newer issues. It works at an even pace and have been quite reliable.
