If the noise is more of a growl than gear wine, it is out of round flywheels. This problem has plagued the hobby since Williams started with their brass steamers.
Once in a while you will get one that is good but most of the time not.
I you like to play around with expermenting you can get the flywheels perfectly round and experience a much lower speed, and super quiet operation.
Instead of going into it here, just email me and I will tell you how you can do it yourself.

Those take a fair amount of grease to be happy. Put a good dab of grease on each gear, and it should quiet them down some.

Truck mounted spur geared motors are usally pretty noisy compared to the worm geared motors that we're used to.

Just received a new set of locos but they seem to be a tad noiesy. They have the truck mounted motors as opposed to the vertical motors. These are the first of this type that I have had and was wondering if this is normal . They are K-Line, F series with all the units linked to one e-unit.
Seems to be a lot of motor humm. It has TMCC and RS. [X-)]
