I recently received a train set from my father-in-law. I'm new to this so please bear with me. The first thing I did was test the transformer with a multimeter, which is Lionel type 1033, and it work. So then I put some track together and connected the transformer, and when I tested the track for voltage I had none. So I cleaned the track real well and now I have power. Now my problem is it won't run well forward. It runs beautiful backwards, but just inches forward at the same speed.
You need to thoroughly clean and lubricate the engine.
Take the boiler off, remove the brushplate and clean the motor commutator, brushes and brushplate with Naphtha. Reassemble the motor, and lightly oil each end of the armature at the bearings. Lightly grease all the gears.
Clean all the wheels with Naphtha, and the engine should run well in both directions.

Ok, thank you. I'll try that today, but what should I use to grease the gears?
Labelle makes a nice kit with oil and grease formulated for model trains.
I tried what you said and now it works great, thanks for the help.
