Believe it or not, that little 45 watt transformer does have an interference-type fit - and the case has to be wiggled/pried up & off the stamped metal base/frame.

May I add a short question? I searched this site and found a link to this

And my question is simple, I have a small 45W Lionel tranformer for a siding. The manual says"the transformer is disasembled by prying off the base". So after 40+ years do these really pry off, or do the break apart? I'm just trying to replace the cord, it works fine.

If it's any help, you can see the Lionel repair instructions here:

Remove the two handles by pulling straight up, and then remove the four corner screws.

From this point, take a good, long, hard look at it. If you can figure out how to remove the top plate to acess the cord, go for it. If you can't figure it out, it's best to take it to someone who knows what they're doing, as Bob said.

A 1033 should not emit a hum but mine will hum if the whistle lever is left halfway in the on position. The return spring should not allow this but I know what it is and know enough to center the lever. If moving the direction/whistle handle does not correct the hum then you have a more serious problem.

A new cord and plug should be soldered on to the transformer's coil & laminations assembly. If you have experience in soldering then the job is very simple. If you don't have experience in soldering, I suggest you take it to someone who can do the job for you.

The humming noise should be checked out I'd check the transformer with a volt meter and see how it performs .

Replacement cords with the Lionel logo on the plug are available at just about any train meet from parts dealers.

I'd be happy to send anyone (for free) a photo copy of Lionel's Schematic Wiring Diagram for the 1033, which includes an illustrated parts list. All I ask is that you send us a Large Self Addressed Stamped Envelope to: MTJ, P.O. Box 4809, Wayne NJ 07474-4809. Include a note: Lionel 1033.

Good luck with your 1033.

Replacing a line cord is a pretty elementary repair, but probably not one that you should try by yourself if you have to ask how to do it. The result could be dangerous. Can you find someone with electrical experience to show you how in person? That would be better than having it done somewhere and not learning anything from it.

The hum is something to be concerned about. It might be harmless. The magnetic circuit of the transformer is made of numerous stamped iron laminations, which can get slightly loose and vibrate, even under normal conditions. However, the humming could also indicate a fault in the winding or the internal wiring of the unit. For that, you really need someone who knows what he is doing, to be safe. I'm afraid that your 1033 may not turn out to be a bargain.

Question about Lionel 1033 Transformer
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, December 18, 2004 3:04 PM
I bought an old Lionel 1033 90 watt transformer off ebay. It seems to be in good condition except the cord need to be replaced. Could someone tell me how I go about doing this. It also hums when I plug it in. Is this a problem? Thanks
