Prewar power problem

I've recently acquired a 259E. It seems to run pretty well, but it also pops the circuit breakers in my modern transformers (I have a CW-80 and one of those starter set 40-watt units) pretty easily. It happens most often when I'm cycling the e-unit.

Is there something internal to the locomotive I should look for, or do I just need a more robust power source to keep it going?

Thanks for the help,

Jim
