Since you're interest is Lionel Trains then Classic Toy Trains is the best.
Enjoy

CTT of course!
But others as well can be helpful, even if they are not devoted to 3-rail.

CTT is the best magazine in O gauge today, far superior to OGR. OGR is loaded with nothing but ads and product reviews and very few feature articles. It appears that they cater to the hi-rail scale crowd. CTT has better feature articles, better photography, and more content. For the smaller scales, I recommend Model Railroader Magazine. It is a good magazine for scratchbuilding and scenery as well.[C):-)]

Joe,

For pre/postwar, Classic Toys Trains definitely is the magazine you want.

Also, check out the Greenberg/Kalmbach sections of this website for books that contain information specific to your interests.

Some train dealers send catalogs to their better customers. Until then, consider joining the Lionel Rail Roader Club, run by Lionel. Membership includes all the catalogs. Here's the link for further info: http://www.lionel.com/Clubs/Findex.cfm

Both magazines have some commonalitys but CTT seems more geared toward toy toy train collecting/operating with an excellent focus on postwar Lionel and Flyer. They have been on a postwar Lionel roll with the last few issues. OGR seems geared more toward hi rail with an excellent focus on the newly imported scale steam machines and diesels.

Because I'm a postwar collector who dabbles in hi rail, I buy both and it's hard to say which is my favorite because one month's CTT may be better than OGR and vise versa. If I had to settle for one, it would probably be CTT. I'm glad there are two magazines because there is a month or two between issues. It only takes a week or two and I'm ready for another issue so they both help fill the void.

If your area of interest is prewar and postwar toy trains (either collecting, operating, or both), then CTT is certainly the publication that will best serve your needs.

If scale model railroading is what attracts you, then surely you should consider "Model Railroader."

And, of course, "Trains" and "Classic Trains"--both devoted to prototype railroading--should appeal to you regardless of your modeling interests.

Definitely don't overlook the Kalmbach/Greenberg book line, because they provide a good number valuable references that will help you in the hobby regardless of what your interests may be.

I regularly buy and read the following Kalmbach publications: Classic Toy Trains, Garden Railways, Model Railroader, Classic Trains, and Trains. Rather than subscribe, I prefer to buy them at a local bookstore simply because it affords me an opportunity to browse through other publications while I'm there.

Stupid question[:D] (sorry there is no such thing as a stupid question)
No really, all you want to know about trains from the prewar, mainly postwar and modern 3 rail 0 gauge is in this magazine. Not all at once, but together with this board and all the people here, you can get an answer on almost everything.
It also has a few very nice layout items every month with pictures and railplan, and articles on technics used in all kinds of engines.

The only stupid questions can be found on the OGR forum.[#wstupid][:0]

Your best bet for O gauge is CTT magazine. I also like Classic Trains because of the steam locos they feature.

Bashing other forums is bad manners. Not smiled on on CTT.

If you asked the same question of the OGR site it would be a different answer. Different strokes for different folks.

What is hi rail? I see references to that all the time, but I'm not sure what you mean.
Thanks!

Hi-rail(or High-Rail) is basically running scale trains on 3-rail track. Hi-railers are generally more concerned with realistic scenery than tinplaters are traditionally. Many hi-railers also have wider curves on their layout than many tinplaters, to allow them to run the larger scale-sized equipment.

Wisdom and experience is all around you. Which magazine should you subscribe to in order to learn as much as you can? That's easy......ALL OF THEM. CTT and OGR are equally good but the difference is that CTT is more devoted to TOY TRAINS hence the title while OGR tends more towards actually engaging in modelling. But they pretty much overlap. You can't learn as much by ignoring any source of information. This may sound like treason but your best bet is to stock up on past issues of any train publication that catches your interest. It is cheaper and it's all there already and you don't have to wait for them to randomly hit on something you are interested in. Remember this is a HOBBY not a team and you really do need a little background to make a good model railroad. Nobody ever suggests it but you can learn much from a good public library. Sounds corny, but you would be surprised at what you can find on those shelves. Try it. Odd-d
