I recently bought a Marx M-10005 streamliner. I've spent the past week getting it cleaned up and mechanically functional, and it looks and runs well. I'm pleased.
But the wheels are pretty much of a mess. Ragged, chipped and beginning to show the early cracks of apparent Zinc Rot. Clearly, they need replaced.
So my questions are:
1: What wheels (2 geared and 2 non-geared) are the correct ones for the M10005?
2: Can anyone recommend a source for them? None of my usual suppliers seem to list them. Yeah, I know about eBay, but I still don't know which wheels would be correct.
Thanks in advance.
You can try (you may have to e-mail and ask)...
www.traindoctor.com or
www.henningstrains.com
Too bad about the zinc rot, unfortunately once it starts there's no stopping it.
Try out http://www.trainpartsformarx.com/
If he doesnt have them, he will know what you need. Some of these Marx streamlined diesels use the same motor setup as steam, but I am not entirely sure that all the 10005's used it. I have seen pre war 100005 engines with the usual steam type of motor setup, but some of the later silver ones like the one I have used a small motor with smaller wheels. Sounds like you have the usual large wheel setup.
Thanks to both of you. I have contacted one of the suppliers you cited above, and ordered the correct wheels. I'll post photos when I receive and install them.
Great! Keep us posted will you? We'd like to hear how the story ends.
Okay, as requested, here are a couple of shots of my M-10005 (with its new wheels) on my tinplate layout:
