MagneTraction "conversion" to traction tire
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, December 13, 2004 5:35 AM
My Lionel magnetraction steam locos spin their wheels going up a grade (using the Lionel graduated grade treslte sets) and the coupler between the tender and the first car slips open. Can traction tires be added to the wheels of a magnetraction locomotive to improve the traction?

My newer locos, even my Reading 0-6-0 dockside switcher, can pull the trains right on up the grade and around the layout without any problem, but a few magnetraction ones get stuck.

Thanks,
Dan R.

And the answer is maybe.

I have always wanted to do the same thing, and there was an article in CTT about adding traction tires to wheels by using super glue. It printed over a year ago. I have never tried it...too chicken.

Another method I heard about was using some type of clear caulk for the wheels. I don't know if thay would work or not.

One of our other forum member mentioned using a narrow strip of masking tape on the drive wheels. Be sure to clean the wheels first, to remove any oil.

You could also try to add weight to the locomotive.

Using super glue for traction tyre wheels????
Use a metal glue if you want to glue anything. Better is it to first tap the axle slightly oval and then press the wheel on with locktite. If you use the red one it will never come loose again...

Daan, I think they're talking about gluing the tires to the wheels, not gluing the wheels to the axles.

What type of track and what kind of condition?
