Thanks , guys,

FIFE, the Fusion for plastic was base coat and I used Krylon MAXX on the top coat. Also sanded all the flat areas with 400 before top coat. The key to it looking good is the time it is in the blast cabinet removing the old. Wink

Some of the heat stamping is hard to get rid of.

RT, something close to this.

WOW Hi Ryan,

I may have to, After all this I find the paint is far from a match to Alaska RR. So maybe a bunch of cheap re-paints cars to build a train and make up a road name. Bang Head Don't want to put any more coats on what I have already done. Wink

And I know, this place is almost in the dirt but you will never see me on F-book.

Kevin was relooking at your shells and then the Alaska engine you gave a link to.

If your going to do your own road name I think Gold like Alaska or Silver as the stripes and nose work. Just a thought, even white would look good

Well as it ended up RT, The first paint I thought about and had here is what I am going with. Only thing is it is a 24 hour dry paint but it is satin midnight blue and almost perfect for the Alaska paint match. I went to ACE today and got the 15 min dry Kyrlon Navy blue and still not dark enough. So I tried it on the old 202 shell I am not using first and it laid down nice and did not lift off the Krylon paint on it. So now all three shells are drying in the shed with the heat set at 72. RT, I would not of cared but I did want it to be a closer match to my Alaska boxcar with train sounds I will use with this ALCO set.

It is much better and I will get some pictures as soon as things are dry enough to do it.

 UPDATE:

The finish coat I ended up with was with Rust-Oleum American Accents Tapestry Midnight Blue Satin paint # 7943. Here it is now, a much better match.  It may darken and have less gloss as it dries up more and that will be okay. It is only an hour dry and needs 6 hours to handle.

Another place to look at the Alaska paint.

Go re-read what I said, I said it was nice I did not break on it. Unless you know what your talking about shut up. I'm tired of your whinning. I did not say anything negative I just said in the first post if he wanted to make his own road name it would look nice with same stripes that Alaska has in either gold or silver.

I think Kevin can defend for himself, If he had a problem with my comments.

Yeah and it's better when you aren't here. And I had nothing to do with the shutting down. Big deal on lou thing I just felt that was one sided was all I was saying, I don't care how it came out I made my point and that was it.

Oh boo hoo about the hommies as you call them. Why did you sell the train set that you got help to build. What happen to your great train shop that went flop flop. You want to throw stuff I'll throw all kinds back at you. Don't throw rocks if you live in glass house as the saying goes.

Your the one whinning here not me. You started this BS not me. I compelmented Kevin.

Oh as selling to you I basically gave you that stuff. I sold it to you for about 1/4 what it was worth. But because you had this so called train store I knew you had to make money on them also.

Kev which paints work without etching the plastic?

I see Ryan is back hiding behind a new name. Still the same.

Jim, can't say for sure because when I blasted the old paint off in the cabinet it etched the plastic. But I would think that the Krylon Fusion and the newer Rust-Oleum 2X paints would both work because they are for use with plastic. The Rust-Oleum 2X paint comes in the Midnight Satin Blue, same as I used on my shells.

The 2x paint looks promising. Some brands I use to use now etch the plastic. Change of formula for the envirement don'tcha know.

That is why they don't have the 24 hour dry paint I used on the shells SJ, They don't make it anymore. I had it on the shelf since 2006  Laugh

When I put the first coat of Fusion on the raw shells it lifted some but I think it was because I put it on to heavy and wet. Not because of the paint. Some 400 sanding a week later and it was all good.

SJ, I am kind of confused by your question, do you mean etching or lifting?
You etch the material to be painted to help adhere the paint to the surface as I understand it. Like I did in the blast cabinet. If there is a conflict between the surface to be painted and the paint it will lift. Like wrinkle the paint. Plastic is hard to do because of the agents in the material to help release it from the molds. Hudson John taught me that. I always knew it could lift on plastic and that is why I got the for plastic paint. Not that it matters, just wondering if we are talking the same thing?

No not lifting. Some store spray paints actually eat into the plastic before it can dry. Not holes just messes up the plastic surface and leaves a rough finish.

Okay I got ya SJ, Yeah right a lot of paint will eat / melt the plastic. I think you will be safe with the two we have discussed here. Plastic safe. Smile I always test it on a place where it won't show to be sure. Like inside the shell some place.

Please sitck to the point guys!

On the paint of the ALCO shells, Getting there but it is a fight with rattle cans.

SJ, no issues with the paint and plastic,,,,,,,,but.

The paint still leaked past the masking tape in three spots. Stuff is too wet coming out of the can no matter what you do. I thought I was back far enough and barely laid it on? I am going to do some touch-up then do the decals and close the paint shop after I put the stripe on the boxcar I shot today. Tongue Tied

I did burnish the mask and thought I had it tight as I could, but there are so many little bumps and things it could not hold back the leaking. So a bit of the tape, paint and painter is the problem.  Embarrassed It will all work out good if I only take videos as it is running.  Laugh Wink

So as long as it is running on the track and the perfects back off, it will be fine. Laugh

Pictures later.
