A belated thank you, folks. I did pry the handles off (gently) and fixed the problem. I appreciate your help.
John
Guess your right but sure would fool me looking at the breakdown with the dotted line going all the way down. But I don't have one. just thought it would help.

That eyelet through the nameplate just holds the nameplate on, trust me. I found out the hard way.
rrtraincollector's right, just get a good grip on the throttle handle center, rock it back and forth while lifting it straight up, it'll come off. After that pull the screws and the cover comes off easily.
I gently rocked my handles from the middle round piece of the handles up and down and they came off one by one doing this. ( I did kinda start them with a small flat head screw driver and the loose part I found was this it is shown in like the 7th diagram of where Kevin has you going with his link
I'm not going to put it back in as I tried and kept popping out. I think the only way is to take completely apart so you can hit the tabs in so it will hold.

I need to open a Lionel postwar KW transformer to see why something is rattling around in there when you gently shake the unit. I'm not sure how to remove the A and B levers. Do they just pry up or is there some other way to get them off?
