I have a few cars missing a hook and have no problems with them.

In my experience, you would be fine.
I have a chance to pick up some prewar rolling stock with the box and hook type couplers. However one is missing a hook. Will that make a difference, does each car have to have a hook or would one be enough to keep the cars together. Thanks
