Any tips on lubricating a postwar Lionel 2333 Santa Fe F3? Do you have to remove the motors to do so?

Oh yes.
There is a double worm in the motor truck - this is where a lot of the caked up grease collects & coagulates. The longitudinal worm shaft pillow blocks are not symetrical - they must go in in the same orientation as they come out.
Clean it all out & replace with modern synthetics... grease on gears & oil on axles/bushings. I also inject Red 'N' Tacky(using a plastic inkjet syringe) into the motor grease reservoirs after saturating the armature bushings and running them in with Mobil 1.
