Hi!
Here's a question for Bob et all:
During the holidays, I came across a box of Atlas Selectors, Controllers, "DPDT" and "SPST" Connectors from my HO days.
Being "electrically challenged", I thought I'd ask:
Can any of these be used on anything with our traditional Lionel O27 stuff or is just best to pass them on?
As always, many thanks.
Same here! Had a lot left over from HO days. I use them with no problems. Selectors, controllers etc... I use them for controlling block sections, on-off switches etc.
I'd need more detail about what specifically a "selector," "connector," or "controller" is, as those terms are used for all kinds of things. (For example, the first two terms are types of telephone Strowger switches, but i'm sure you're referring to something else!)
But "DPDT" and "SPST" are just types of electrical switches: double-pole-double-throw, often used for reversing the connections of two wires, as is done for reversing DC trains; and single-pole-single-throw, which is just a simple on-off switch.
Can you post more detailed descriptions or pictures?

Bob: These are Atlas items described as follows:
#215 Selector - "Four single-pole, double-throw switches provide
two-cab operation for four blocks"
#220 Controller - "Simplest way to wire and control tricky reversing loops,
wyes and turntables.
Has reversing switches for two main-line cabs
plus a switch selectable by either cab, for
directional control or reversing loops etc."
Your "DPDT" and "SPST" explanation is clear and (as I recall) they "were" used to
control power to sidings and to reverse engines.
Thanks for reminding me of the old operations. (Memory fades at times)
Really appreciate it.
I had a bunch of Atlas SPST power block switches and attempted to use them on my O layout. They couldn't handle the power and burned up. Today I use home wiring switches and have no problems.
I would need to know what the current ratings are and how many watts you are going to be using with the H.O. scale switches. Most H.O. scale switches don't have as high a current rating as what might be needed for O scale trains. Need to check the amp & voltage ratings first before using H.O. stuff for O scale trains.

FYI, Atlas makes heavy duty selector and twin control units for use with O.

Thanks to all for your replies.
Found out that a neighbor's nephew is "into" HO. They are going to good use.
