Complete cover for Lionel 6346 Alcoa hopper car
Posted by trains2353 on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 9:59 AM

Long shot I know, but looking for a cover(not just the hatch), for a Lionel 6346. I have a chance to buy a nice OE one, but has no cover. Can be in any condition.

(If this is the wrong place to post this, please let me know)

What does OE mean?

Sorry; too many years in the automotive business. "OE" is original equipment. In other words, a Lionel top to a 6346 in any shape. Or a parts only complete car.

From your other posts, I gather that you are relatively new to the hobby of collecting Postwar Lionel Trains. Therefore, a comment:

I understand that the coverless 6346 Alcoa hopper is in nice shape. But the odds of finding a nice, complete, orginal cover are slim, and would likely cost about the same as a complete car. If you repaint a cover, its going to be tough to match the hopper car, and most collectors would have little interest should you decide to sell it.

MPC Lionel made a copy of the Alcoa car but due to ageing I doubt you would get a paint match.

If you were to buy what RT shows, the hatch cover and springs are something you can get from The Train Tender.

see 6446

6446-11, 12, They would need to be painted to match the silver.

 Or the MPC option.

I appreciate all the response's. After pricing all that would be needed, appears to be better to get a complete car.

Just a bit of my history. Was heavy into mostly PW Lionel, but had to clear out just about al my stuff in order to retire( and pay the house off!). At my one day a week part time job, there are two collectors there who got me going again. So at 65, here we go again. Mostly under the tables at shows where I'm going rather well, and 1 or 2 items topside($ permitting). I do have a two track wall layout in the basement rec room. Sorry to be a bit long winded, but I forgot how much fun it is to walk around the shows and how good the smoke and motor scents are!

Update: Got everything I need to build a roof from Jeff @ Train Tender. I'll have to paint the roof, but the hatches are silver. All for $20! Jeff is very helpful and a nice guy!
