K-line K3670-1838CC does not respond to command mode
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, December 19, 2016 6:52 PM

Having recently unboxed and set up my new Lionel Legacy system and MTH DCS system, I am now going through the process of adding locomotives to the system memory.

I have tried unsucessfully to get my K-line Mikado to run.  When in run mode, it does not respond to the Legacy System, however the internal E-unit does operate (FWD-Neutral-Reverse).  In Progam mode, it takes off as soon as track power is applied.  Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

Edit: upon opening the tender, I found no battery installed, just 2 9V battery connectors (one with wires, one without wires) plugged together.  One of the chips on the board says Lionel Trains on it.  All the plugs in the tender seem to be tight.

I don't know about Lionel's TMCC, but I know that MTH uses a batery with it's PS-1 system and PS-2 command control system. Have you tried programming your K-Line engine separate from any other engines? What I know about MTH DCS system you must program each engine by itself or what ever other engine or engines get programmed in at the same time, that means having a separate programming track.

Have you tried to do a complete reset of the TMCC in the K-Line engine? Sometimes that will correct issues.

I have never had an issue just adding them to the track and programming them one at a time.  I dont think that is the issue here, as the locomotive will not sit still with the power applied.

I attempted to perform the reset procedure per the K-line manual.  As soon as I put the locomotive in program mode, place it on the track and turn on the power, it takes off at full speed.  Also I do not have the CAB-1, only Legacy.  The last step is to press Aux 1 then press 4, when I press Aux 1, instead of number I get a bunch of meaningless icons.

Do you know of a way to reset a TMCC locomotive on Legacy? Or did I do something incorrectly, its quite unnerving to have a locomotive hurtling around a loop of track with no control over what is happening, and It may be possible that I performed the reset improperly.

It sounds like a motor driver issue.  Does it also take off if you have it in RUN mode?

You can just press the key that corresponds to the number 4, left hand, second one down.  If you want to see the numbers, press INFO, SCROLL, SCROLL, CAB1, INFO and you'll be in CAB1 emulation and the numbers are there all the time.

Another point.  When you setup a new locomotive, it defaults to Legacy mode in that menu, for the K-Line, it won't recognize any commands in that mode.  Once you set CAB1 mode, see if that changes anything.

1/3 of the time in fwd.  1/3 it sits there.  1/3 in reverse (E-Unit is functioning?)

Thank you I'll give that a shot.

I set up the Legacy CAB-2 in CAB-1 mode.  I attempted a reset of features.  The locomotive took off upon application of power while in program mode.  I completed reset procedure, flipped the switch to run, and it acts like a non-command locomotive still.

Also I note that I did separate all other locomotives from track power, which changed nothing.

I also noticed that the locomotive chuffing, etc, had no correllation to the speed of the locomotive.

Okay by chance do you know anybody that has a cab1 set up? If so see if you can take it there and do a reset or what it does?

If not starting to wonder if R2CL/R4CL board is maybe bad. I had a bad one in a lionel 2380 that when I put it on the track it would work fine for about 5 minutes but once it got warm it would jump into conventional mode so at 18V it would fly off the track before I could react. Other items worked fine. ( engine sounds, bell, horn) Well up to that point never was able to test once it did that. Think you need to let someone who has the equipment to check it out.

Reading all this makes me glad I'm a dinosaur and a reactionary and a Luddite and run conventional only.  One less thing to complicate my life.

First locomotive I have had issues with (also the only K-line I own).  The command stuff is super easy to deal with, and not at all complicated (at least MTH isn't).

Correct application of punctuation would have cleared up the confusion.  The sentence could be read either way without punctuation (I initially assumed phillyreading was the expert of which you spoke, but re-reading the above posts corrected that).

If Lee and/or John has any ideas about what I might try, it would save me a 45min drive monday.  If not then my dealer knows a guy.

even with out punctionation it was straight forward, "I sent a Email to one of the pro's I know phillyreading know him also his name is John"  nowhere does it make one think I was meaning Lee. what part of phillyreading know too means a guy name John who happened to come in and give you his thoughts ( gun runner John)

As someone else had stated, in a different thread, here is another example of a thread that has been hi-jacked.  So no help to the original poster. No wonder people don’t post. We must all be smarter than the others. At least in one’s own eyes. Tongue Tied
I would like to help the poster out, but I don't run anything TMCC or command.

No worries, I helped hijack it.  Bob nailed it on the whole proper punctuation thing.

Ive decided the internal electronics are going in the circular file (or rather my pile of wires and circuit boards because you cant throw electronics in the garbage here).  I have a protosound 3 board to "drop in" in its place, though it looks like it might not really be a "drop in".  Will have to find a person who as done it before.  My LHS (B&F) knows I a guy.
