reconditioning Lionel track

I searched and found nothing on the topic. My son's Lionel is around 12 years old and now it is time to pass it on to my grandson :-)

When we last used this train, maybe 8-9 years ago, the track was getting pretty dodgy. It is now rusty, so it is going to be even worse, though I haven't tried it yet. I feel pretty competent to clean and lube the engine, but I'd like some advice on the track.

I know better than to use steel wool, as the detrius could get into the engine and really mess that up. I tried an eraser, and that didn't do the job at all. Is there a standard method to clean track well enough to sue the train, at least temporarily? I'd like for him to run it around the Christmas tree, so I suppose I should have thought of this earlier, but I just now found it in the storage building.
