IMHO, the amount of information in the book makes it a bargain, even at the original list price.

I think it is the best reference book on Lionel that I own.

As many have stated  this is an uncataloged set

 

Lionel did some interesting things in that field

 

Once I saw set in 1996 an Illinois Central AB  from 1955 with a Generator Car cop and hobo and Wabash brakeman

Sadly it went over 1500.00 so I could not buy it

 

LOVE to find the one with the turntable and four YES FOUR locomotives Thats in he Lionel Promotional Sets book for the 1960's

 

Also FAO Scwartz has a version of the Father Son set with different components

 

And Polk's had a set with the 6464 700 and 6464 250 box cars

With a new edition of Greenberg's prewar O coming out next year I'm hopeful I'll get a chance at buying updated postwar books in the near future.  Used versions are just too expensive for me.  I'd rather lay out that kind of cash on actual trains!

Promational sets were usually made up from left over stock. Many low end sets having the same number did not have the same cars, although something of equal value Lionel just packed them with what was on hand.

 Neat to know that this is a set I ended up with when at first I thought it was just a box of stuff. 

Looking at the cars, it seems lionel was using up some 1956 production only left over cars in this set as well as 1957 cars.

Yes on the 9643, as I got dyslexic with the number.  I have the Greenberg Guide to uncataloged sets, which where I found the right number.  Everything else fell into place.  I fortunately have all the necessary books on Prewar & Postwar Sets, along with the Authoritative Guide to Promotional Sets, by Schmidt.  It just took some serious shopping to get them all at realistic prices.  They are all Out Of Print, and sellers want high prices.  I just kept looking, and found good deals for all that I bought.

 This set seems to be of a higher level than a starter set. The engine is perfect two of the cars have some sort of glue stain.

It came with a bunch of other stuff including a Rio Grande #53 snow plow  and this stuff.

Uncataloged sets are in a seperate book out of print for quite some time now. Yes they are pricey. Lionel sold a lot of sets that way. Many were bottom end for promotions and the like.

Edit I just checkeck Amazon...$23.99 for a used book up to $77 new.

if you ask carl, he has a postwar set book that does uncataloged sets where Sears set would fall into. And probably your set. Having the set number is a big help. I've tried to buy the book a couple of times but just to rich for my blood. My books which list cataloged sets stops at 41xx and then jumps up to 11xxx so yours is a uncataloged set

I took a close look and the box is marked 9643 not 9343 it for sure is a 6. There were other items that I figured were got later. Did you mean to say 9643 not 9343?

 I found this on line but they don't list the number. This is the set.

The Set is correct from 1957, but you got the number wrong.  It does appear to look like 8343, but in actuality the number is 9343, made exclusively for Sears.  Described in Sears Catalog as "Huge 9 Unit Diesel" and sold as Lionel's Cataloged 2275W/815 set also.  Your list of components has one EXTRA car not included in either set, which is the 3419 Helicopter Launching car.

 Well I got a bunch of Lionel stuff from a friend that he got from his brother. Most seems to be from around 1957. Some of the items are, a

Wabash GP7  WOB # 2339, Lionel 1044 Transformer and the other stuff listed below.

 And this stuff. Not sure what is with what but thinking some of it came in the box set.

The box is numbered # 8643.

 Is this some sort of set??? I can’t find anything on this Lionel number.
