Charlie

Nice engine! Had trouble trying to watch the video a couple days back.

Great sounds on that one. The whistle reminds me of the boat whistles they used to use on the N&W articulateds.

Sure sounds like an N&W "hooter" whistle off a Class A, the "J's" had the steamboat whistle.  No matter, that's a nice engine.  I wonder if the Allegheny's really sounded like that?

Ever see an Allegheny up close?  I have.  There's one at the B&O Museum in Baltimore and let me tell you, the size of the thing will take your breath away!

When we were at the Museum along with us were Lady Firestorms sister and family.  My sister-in-law's husband is quite the car guy and gearhead, and he was absolutely stunned by the Allegheny, especially after reading the spec sheet on it.

"My God," he said, "Why did they ever get rid of these things?"

"Well," I replied, "When diesel engines came along and promised greater operating efficiencys the railroads didn't think any more of scrapping steam engines any more than trucking companys would think of junking worn-out tractor units.  Maybe they shouldn't have been so precipitous about it but it was done anyway.  We're lucky to have left what we do."
