You are correct, the 2031's were only seperate sale.  They were made during the ame time frame as the 2032 Erie Alco's and the 2033 UP alco's  The Erie Alco's came in a freight set as described above, and the UP I think came in both a similar freight set and a passenger set with the small streamlined passenger cars.  As you have discovered, they are great runners, very smooth.  About any of the early postwar freight cars will look good behind them.

More than likely. Lionel did a few engines that way.

I have a set of M&STL Alco's that where never a part of a set so I made my own set up two 6464-525's a 6464-50 remake and a 6059 M&STL caboose which I illuminated.

Thanks everyone for the help. I did find a site that said the 2031 Rock Island Alcos were sold by themselves and not with any sets. I do not know if that is true or not.

Thanks again for your help and info

I don't have a book on uncataloged sets but believe these never came in a set. With that said you could always add postwar cars like 6465, 6462, 6456, 6464-75, and say a 6017 caboose

Lionel Alco A-A diesel Rock Island 2031
Posted by irontooth on Monday, October 24, 2016 9:19 PM

I was given a pair of Lionel diesels 2031 Rock Island. The horn was not working, got it to work, coil knuckle coupler was broken ,fixed it and resoldered the broken wire to the coil. These units work very well now. I am an American Flyer guy but now I have this Lionel diesel combo and would like to know what rolling stock this A-A Alco pair might have pulled? Any help would be nice. I could not find any info.

Thanks

Mike
