The earlier series transformers are a little rougher in their variability. The speed control is much smoother on the later versions, I believe 1954 onward (but that is not for certain).

The Lionel Service manual pages have a date of 1-52, which would be January 1952.

I have noticed some variation on how Postwar Lionel 1033 transformers were constructed, but I have never seen anything written about them, nor have I seen anything on dating them.

Is there a way to determine when a Lionel Type 1033 transformer was manufactured?  I don't see any serial number or other unique info on the plastic cover or under the metal base.
