New Member-Need Smoke Unit Help Please
Posted by HAZMAT9 on Sunday, December 5, 2004 12:48 AM
I'm new to the forum and hope someone can help. Just getting back into model railroading and decided on purchasing a steam set for a great price. In the past, I've been into the non-smoke diesels by Athearn. I purchased Bachman's "Overland Limited" set which comes with a Niagara 4-8-4. The set was supposed to come with smoke fluid although none was included, but I decided to buy Lifelike's "Smoke." I added a few drops and ran it for a few minutes with one wisp of barely detectable smoke. I added more fluid and I guess I overfilled it and it's now running out the bottom onto the rails. In any event, how much smoke should I expect if the unit is operating correctly? And, what can I do to remove the excess fluid (I tried getting most out using a pipette)? Is their anything else I need to do to improve the smoke generation? P.S....I know I know maybe I shouldn't have purchased Bachman, couldn't pass up the deal. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Great Forum Steve (Hazmat9)

Hi Hazmat, and welcome.
Since you talk about Bachmann (Rivarossi/ lilliput) I think you're on the wrong board, but I'm happy to help you. You can get the fluid out by laying the machine upside down on a paper towel during the night. The fluid can easily flow out.
Normal use with seuthe smokesystems is ten drops maximum!! Even one drop evapourating should make quite some smoke, but probably the smokesystem is designed for maximum trackvoltage, and thus will function best at high speeds.
Try the model railroader page; that is about h0 and N gauge..

Weclome aboard Steve,

Here is the link for the Model RR Forum

No problem posting here, but you may find more help over there as they run HO and we basicly use 3 rail O gauge.
