Lionel Postwar Milk Car ?
Posted by traindaddy1 on Friday, May 6, 2016 2:19 PM

Well, another trip to my parts box.

Three of my postwar milk cars (6472, 3482, 3472) have plastic doors and plastic frames around the doors.

My postwar 3462 milk car has metal doors set in a plastic frame.

I found a pair of metal milk car door sets with metal doors but these also have a metal frame.

Would you know when these metal framed metal doors were made and which of the milk cars had them?

As always, many thanks.

The metal doors with metal frame were for the 3462 only, which was 1947-48 issue.  The metal door with plastic frame was from the 3472 of 1949 issue, and then in 1950 they replaced the metal doors with all plastic frame and doors.  The 3462 car used coil couplers, and that changed with the intro to 3472 having magnetic couplers with slide shoes.

Any chance of seeing a picture of the 3472 with plastic door frames and metal doors? I don't think I've ever seen one.

CW, You won't see one, as I made a blatant error, assuming the frame on the 1949 version was plastic.  Looking at the white frame against the unpainted doors made me think it was plastic, when in fact it is painted aluminum, with unpainted aluminum doors.  MY errorOops
