Lionel locomotive compatibility
Posted by CBT on Friday, April 15, 2016 6:45 AM

Hi, I have the lionel CW-80 controller with lionel fastrack. I was wondering what locomotives were compatible with it with all this lionel DCS and Lionel legacy controll system.

Lionel doesn't do DCS that's MTH, Lionel Does TMCC/Legacy which is compatible with each other. Any lionel engine with TMCC or Legacy can be run by either system. With that said Legacy is the better system as it is the upgraded system from the old Tmcc cab one system. Now they have a Cab1L out there which is basicaly Legacy but a lighter system it's not the full blown legacy system. Finding the original Cab1 tmcc system is basically only on ebay or something like that and lately it has a preimum price on it ( more than it is really worth ) if you can get both parts with the cord for under $100 in my book is about right price but there asking like $200 - $350 for the complete set out there you can get Cab1L for that on low end and less on the high end of that. (Cab1L is running about $229 )

Since it's a conventional transformer, you can run almost all locomotives, in conventional mode, with that transformer. I have one of those transformers as well that came with my Polar Express set. Occasionally, I've used it with my Legacy and TMCC locomotives in conventional mode on a temporary track loop. However, if you want to take full advantage of the command features, you will need a CAB-1, CAB-1L or CAB-2 set up. You could still use the CW-80 as a command control power supply on a small layout.

You should be able to run most Lionel but may have some trouble with MTH or Weaver engines. I have a Weaver engine that don't like the newer transformers and the CW-80 might give it a problem.
