Questions about the digital subscription
Posted by trestrainfan on Sunday, February 28, 2016 1:57 AM

I'm thinking of changing from a subscription to the paper magazine to a digital subscription. I really enjoy the paper magazine and I'll miss reading it that way, but my main reason for considering the change is because I'm trying to reduce my clutter and get rid of all the boxes and stacks of magazines

How are the digital subscription issues delivered or made available to subscribers?

I'd be reading the digital version on a laptop. Is there any sort of a preview so we can see what reading the magazine in the digital format is like? A try before you buy option?

Is it possible to download each issue as a PDF, or in some format I can keep on my computer, so I have a folder with the back issues on my computer rather than a stack of paper back issues sitting on the floor? If it is possible, two questions about the PDF's:

1. What is the approximate size (MB) of a downloaded issue in PDF format?

2. Are there convenience features in the downloaded pdf such as clickable links in the table of contents to take you to specific articles, or is it just a regular pdf file where you have to go page by page?

I started my subscription to CTT back around 2006, so I'd consider buying the "Classic Toy Trains: 25 Years and Counting on DVD-ROM" to replace my paper magazines. There isn't much of a description of how that product works. Could you briefly describe it?

The DVD goes up through 2014. Is there any way to get digital versions of the 2015 issues and the 2016 issues that have been published this year? Otherwise I'd have to keep the paper magazines between 2014 and whenever I start a digital subscription.

For those of you who have a digital subscription, do you like it, or have you gone back to the paper magazine?

Kind of hard to believe no one from Kalmbach has noticed this post or felt it was worth a reply. Very disappointing.

I too decided to go digital to cut down on the accumulation of paper issues.  The digital is great. I carry the issues on my ipad. I wish they would make back issues available on line, like some of the other magazines.  I also feel that subscribers should be allowed to access earlier edition.  I know they are available at extra cost on the DVDs, but I'd like to have them available on my ipad --which can't read a DVDs.

Thank you for expressing interest in Classic Toy Trains magazine in digital format.   Classic Toy Trains is available through our digital partner, Zinio.  Digital editions can be viewed on multiple platforms:  Android, iPad and iPhone, Kobo, Windows 7 and 8, Blackberry, Mac, and Web OS.

When ordering directly from us, your digital issues are fulfilled from our partner, Zinio.  Zinio will send you an email when your issue is ready to view.  The digital edition is saved in Zinio format (.zno), not PDF.  The Zinio format is optimized to give you a rich magazine reading experience using the Zinio reader.

Unfortunately, a sample copy if not available through our digital partner, Zinio.  If you choose to subscribe and are not satisfied with the issue and/or functionality, you may cancel your order and receive a refund.

Your Zinio subscription would start with the current issue available and give you access to the term of subscription issues. Unfortunately, you would not have access to back issues of the magazine; however back issues are available on the Zinio website for purchase stemming from the January 2012 issue when we first launched digital.

The Zinio Reader App is needed to view the digital issue on your device, as well as the ability to download the issues to your computer.  For mobile devices, download the Zinio App from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.  You can also obtain the reader through the Zinio website at www.zinio.com.

If you'd like to email use directly at customerservice@kalmbach.com, we can email you an overview of the Classic Toy Trains: 25 Years and Counting on DVD-ROM.  Currently, there hasn't been an update to the DVD-ROM and no way to receive a digital version of the 2015 and 2016 issues at this time.

We hope this information helps.  Should you have any further questions about the digital or the DVD-ROM, email Customer Service at customerservice@kalmbach.com and we will be happy to assist you further.
