Lionel 9030 variations?
Posted by Boyd on Wednesday, February 24, 2016 2:31 AM

Through EBay I bought a 4 wheel 9030 flat car. Through pictures I thought it was someones own modifications to a 9030 gondola but upon arrival the grey tool boxes & barrel on one side,, and stake sides on the opposite side look factory. Was this from another Kickapoo Valley set? I'm fascinated with the cheap 70s Lionel 4 wheel cars. The 9330  dump cars are my favorite as I have 20 of them. I wish there were tank, box, hopper and other 4 wheel cars.

A 9330 coal dump car was included in:

  • the cataloged 1972 6-1280 Kickapoo Valley & Northern set,
  • the uncataloged 1972 and 1973 T 1280 Parker Brothers Kickapoo Valley & Northern set and
  • the cataloged 1979 6-1965 Smokey Mountain Line set.

According to TM's Lionel Price & Rarity Guide, Volume 2, 1970-2003, from which all of the above was culled, three variations of the car were made:

  1. Green-black/unlettered (as shown in 1972 catalog - my observation)
  2. Red-black/unlettered (presumably the Parker Brothers version - my guess)
  3. Yellow/black/unlettered (as shown in 1979 catalog - my observation)
