Make sure the pick-up wheels on the tender are clean, there are at least 4 wheels that need to be cleaned & the axle may need cleaning, and clean the copper looking contacts too. The wheels on my 300AC have one plastic and one metal wheel on each axle, make sure to put these back correctly or you will cause a short, both metal wheels go on one side of each truck assembly, two on the left or two on the right side.

The whistle isn't real loud but you can do your best by making the fan blow as free as possible.  Some are not loud because of missing or broken fan blades, and those can be fixed or replaced.  Make sure the airway is not obstructed and the motor lubed, commutator clean and the pickup wheels clean too

I always wanted a 314 they are a piece of history

American Flyer 314AW

Greetings Everyone,

I have a American Flyer 314AW early version, and my question is as follows. Is it possible to get the whistle to sound louder or are they just not designed for much volume?

I want to thank everyone for their help in answering my questions. I have been working hard on getting my American Flyer Steam Locos and Diesels up and runnig. I only have a test track to run them on and check their health. I hope to have a small layout in the near future. I also hope to post some pics once I figure out how to do it.

Thanks everyone
