On a whim I bought a couple of DPDT 12V AC relays last week from Automation Direct last week. So, now I’m beginning to ponder what interesting things to do with them. I’m not looking to set up two-train operation, which is where relays seem most commonly used. One thought was to set up a series of lights where different subsets of the lights go on and off when the train crosses into an insulated block connected to the control coil– although I think a 153C could perform the same function. I would be interested in hearing what others have used relays for in their layouts!

JT, I use a bunch of 153Cs to activate block lights and signal lamps as a train goes by; I use some DPDT switches (not relays) at the front of the layout to allow visitors to activate a gateman and other things.

I use relays with signals. One example functions like a little CTC control at the end of a siding. The signals indicate whether the switch is set for the main track or the siding. If a train enters the block ahead of the switch both signals display stop aspects.
You can also use relays to energize and de-energize tracks in conjunction with switches. You need more contacts than DPDT for both of these examples.
