It's possible that only one of the locomotive's pickups is working.  Put a piece of tape over about 1 1/2 inches of the center rail somewhere else on the track and see whether the locomotive stops there too.

It shouldn't stop. It's losing power somewhere. Make sure ALL the pins are there and check the bottom of the crossover to make sure it is connected all four ways. If all else fails use 2 lockons, one on each side of the figure eight.

Help with my setup

I have recently set up an old Lionel 027 train set. When I run the train in an oval, it runs pretty well. As soon as I try to set up a figure 8, the train stops at the crosstrack. What am I missing?
