About the photo, I'm having difficulty with the geography. If the woman in the photo was standing at the Northern end of the room, the picture could not have been taken from the Western side of the layout as per the article, had to have been the Eastern side. If the photo was taken from the Western side it had to have been pointing Southeast.

The illustration and caption on page 68 of the Lionel Showroom Layouts book seems to confirm this.
I don't care to trust my 60 - 65 years ago memory as my main recollections are of the noise and smell of the trains and that the "subway" was at the South end of the layout, the end closest to the entrance.

The woman in the photo is at the southern end of the room. The subway is at her end, the foreground is the western 32' side of the layout.
The church on the elevated section is inside the South reverse loop/dogbone(depending on which year it was - the O-72 switches were taken out at some point to eliminate derailments).

That's what I think too, Rob, but the article states, "The person holding the camera stood on the western side of the layout and captured a fair amount of it, including the elevated section in the middle, plus the northern end of the room." Hence my confusion.
"northern" is an error, should be "southern". It will likely be corrected in an errata mention in the next issue.

Yes, "northern" is an error. I should have written that the woman was in the southern end of the showroom. I apologize for the mistake and appreciate the sharp eyes of Texas Pete and ADCX Rob who caught this problem.
We will correct this in the next issue--but I would appreciate it if both Texas Pete and ADCX Rob would call me so I can get the correct spelling of their names to include in the magazine.
