These can be cranky, especially if some idiot has already tried to fix them. If you remove the 2 screws on the bottom of the light housing you will expose the coils. Check for broken solder joints on all wiring. Also gently rotate the lantern to observe the plunger mechanism for any snags. These work best with no lubrication - if there is gummy grease on the plunger or gears clean it off with q-tips and lighter fluid or mineral spirits. Hook up 2 wires to your transformer, set it at about 15 volts and apply the wires momentarily to the terminals of each of the two coils - ths should throw the switch in each direction. If you still have problems, remove the other 2 screws on the bottom of the switch motor to remove the coil assembly from the switch body. You will see some sliding electrical contacts which move when the coils move the swivel rail - these contacts are the heart of the non derailing mechanism. If the contact fingers are not making contact, gently bend them down with tweezers. Hope this helps.
