Allergies, older plywood and layout stuff?
Posted by Boyd on Thursday, November 12, 2015 11:28 AM

Diagnosed with Lymes in 2013, which I've had since at least 1985 I wakup with my nose and sinuses feeling like they are on fire. I've been on antibiotics since April and I've been feeling better since August. I'm in Minnesota so I have to close the windows around September. I live with my mom because of the health problems. My 11x13 bedroom is mostly my train layout. The plywood is 10-20 years old. I have newspapers and magazines in the room also which I should put elsewhere. There are throw rugs over the walkway which has stains in the carpet. I have papers on the layout as I have no usable office. Then about 20 plastic storage totes mostly with stored trains. There are scrap pieces of wood also. My track is half Lionel/K-line tubular and other half Fastrack. I have a small humidifier which can raise the humidity in just my room if I have the door mostly shut. This house we are in was built in the 1850s. I'm considering removing all or almost everything including the carpet and layout from my room. I wonder if I could have trouble with the new carpet and carpet pad? I'm not sure about building another layout as I'd need all stainless steel #202 Gargraves and would be spending about $750 to replace my current track. I've thought about a simple loop to loop along the wall track setup. I also have some storage on an old farm in a pole barn and one steel round grain bin with a cement floor. The pole barn roofs leak. The steel grain bin seems dryer but has a vent at the top and some birds tried to build a nest in this thing that hangs from that vent. I could have a layout in the grain bin but the electricity going to it is via extension cords ran through a 6' long grain tube. I don't use any drugs. I just want to wakup in the morning without my nose on fire.

The carpet probably should be replaced with wood or laminate, too much dust there to be good to allergies. The rest shouldn't be a problem, but I'm not a dr.

If you are having allergies, new carpet will most likely make it worse. New carpet has formaldahyde in it as does wood laminates.

You wood be better with tile or hardwood fooring.

I might pull up my carpet and put down tile before I start work on the main area of the layout. One corner of the room looks a bit bad so I will pull the carpet and see what is under it.

DJspanky, The idea of area throw rugs is great!

I suspect this is going to be like a horror movie; "don't pull up the weird carpet!"
