ScaleTrax Infrared Track Activation Device (ITAD) Reliability?

Does anyone have experience (good or bad) with the ScaleTrax ITAD (45-1028) made by MTH? Are these units reliable? How does the ITAD compare with Lionel's product (called an infrared controller I believe)?
