Yep smoke fluid.
As mentioned above the heating element burned out. It is an easy replacement job if you know how to solder. Oh by the way the 8600 was never a very good smoker so don't expect much even after it is fixed.

The smoke unit was designed for liquid smoke fluid. The older postwar units will work with both pills and liquid. It sounds like either the smoke element windings were shorted to each other, or were subjected to very high voltage. Larry
Hey how you doing.Need a little info here if you please?I just bought a NOS 8600. Works fine;but something happened to it.Of all the papper work I got with it nothing was said about the smoke unit. Now I know this unit is the old 2046 engine, but what i didn't know if the smoker took pills or liquid. So as having nothing but liquid smoke ;I filled up the unit and proseeded to smoke, this is where things went wrong;smoke unit got hot, smoke came out.The heating element got, glowed red hot and then there were flames.engines OK ,but smoke unit is toast. Was it suposed to have smoke pills?
