I bought a bunch of postwar trains along with some prewar O gauge at an estate sale. The trains were in a Lionel Standard Gauge set box. None of the acquired trains were Standard Gauge. I tried to research the set number listed on the label [looks like 6908W]but could not find anything. One of the top flaps was stamped "378W" though. [I was able to find info on that set] but it is not the same # as on the label. Does anyone know where I could find a full listing of Lionel all Standard Gauge sets? thank you.
The only source I know and have is "The Standard Catalog of Lionel Trains, 1900-1942, by David Doyle, that has listings for sets, but I doubt if every single set made is listed. The list is pretty good, but I would suspect that there may have been sets produced that are not listed, considering when the Standard Gauge trains were made, and so much time has passed. The number 6908W would never have been used for that set, and the correct number would have been 378W, consisting of 392/392E; 424; 425; 426 consist made in 1934. The highest number set from Prewar is 3300 with 303 & 3300 made in 1910-1911.
The number 6908W was never used by Lionel in any year, and does not show up in any of my books, both Prewar, Postwar, and Uncatalogued sets. If the label is original, and old, it could have been something that a dealer may have put on the box, but the true number would be 378W.
Thanks for taking time to research and reply. I have not found any other info regarding this box and have decided to try my luck on ebay with it. Thanks again!
