A.F. Smoke In Tender
Posted by Mononflyer on Tuesday, August 25, 2015 2:29 PM

Hey All,

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the American Flyer Smoke in Tender unit?  I picked up an engine with the S.I.T. and I need to rewire the smoke unit.

Thanks,

You actually need to search for the wiring diagram of the particular model locomotive as determined by the cab number.  There is no "generic" wiring diagram for a smoke unit.  This site has a number of wiring diagrams for various locomotives.

actually all the smoke in tender units are wired the same. any diagram of a S-I-T unit will work. Gilbert would not waste resources wiring each model seperately. Doug Peck has good diagrams, but you can also do a google search and find the wiring plan on line. hope this helps.

Monoflyer, I found a wiring diagram of a 322 SIT Hudson on the American Flyer Group Facebook page.  Unfortunately it's in PDF format, so I can't attach it as an image.

The tender wiring is fairly easy to describe however:

There are two wires coming from the rear truck rivet, one goes to the locomotive jack and the other attaches to the smoke on/off switch.

The opposite pole of the on/off switch also has two wires coming from it; one connects to the upper brush contact on the back of the piston motor, and the second wire connects to one of the heater wire contacts on the smokebox.  These are the power leads.

There is a jumper between the lower brush contact on the motor and the most forward contact on the field winding.  The other contact on the field winding runs to the remaining heater contact on the smokebox.  And from that second smokebox connector there is also a wire to the front truck, which completes the circuit.  There is also a lead between the front truck and the locomotive.

I hope that helps.

Thanks for the replies.  I have not found a diagram on the internet for the SIT wiring.  If anyone has one, can you point me to it?
