This reminds me of a Marx "channel track" set.
These were described in a thread on this forum from 2012, but the photo links have expired...

Picked up this neat little train set at a garage sale this weekend and I was wondering if anyone knew any details about it. Like when and where it was made, etc? I saw a couple on eBay, but they did not list any details about them. It is approximately N scale for a size reference.
The locomotive windup/clockwork mechanism does work and all of the cars are in pretty good shape except one of the yellow boxcars has some rust on one side.
I think it is a neat little set and only paid $3.00 for it.
