The value listed from "The Standard Catalog of Lionel Train Sets; by David Doyle (2007) lists Scarcity of 4, excellent condx- $900; like new condx- $1650.
The true value is what someone is willing to pay at today's prices, with condition being the primary thing for value.
Good luck
Thank you all who have replied , and thank you also for all the information ,
the set is in very nice condition with nothing broken and no scratches that I can see , it appears to be a very nice condition set
PS thesiding you are correct in addition to the gold car and sherrif car the set also has a baggage and a whistle coach

When trying to determine the value of an old train, condition is everything. Any cracks, scratches, chips, and even rust will affect the value. Having the original box(es) certainly adds value. Again, the condition of the box is important too.
The set was made in 1962 the last General set I believe
It is called the Plainsman
If ou have it boxed at least 500.00 in value if boxed and if nothing is damaged or broken it can go to `1000.00
And you said it has three pasenger cars the set came with two a baggage and a whistle coach
The set came with Loco and Tender Sheriff and outlaw gold car baggage car and whistle coach
Lionel did make a seperate sale coach WITHOUT whistle if you have that with set as well
yes 1000.00
I am new to the forum and recently I purchased a nice vintage Postwar train set from the original owner , It is still in its set box with cardboard seperators ,
The set is a Super O Set and the box is numbered 13036 , the box has the conten seperators as well as the original paperwork
The set includes a 1872 General vintage steam locomotive and 3 antique passenger cars , it also includes a Fort Knox Gold Car and The Sheriff and Outlaw Car.
The loco is in very nice original shape and all the delicate items are still present on it.
Can someone on the forum let me know about thre set such as time period (years produced) rarity compared to other General sets and value.
Thank you all in advance for any information
