Lionel HO Train set
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, March 29, 2002 4:38 AM
I am in the process of helping a Senior Citizen resurrect his interest in the HO hobby and discovered in his collection that he has a Lionel HO set of 5 freight cars, a 4-6-2 steamer and a small power pack.

The catalog is dated 1963 and the base plate of the engine is stamped, Made in US of America-Lionel Corp.

According to the Public Broadcasting Station's Tracks Ahead Series, Rivarossi made HO for Lionel in 1957, Athearn in 1958 and Roco in 1981.

Obviously not entirely correct if the catalog is dated 1963.

Also there is a parts list and for service"Service
Dept, Hillside New Jersey which brings me to my first question. Hillside NJ is also the location of Atlas. Coincidence or did Atlas also have arrangements with Lionel?

2nd question. Is this a collectable item? Is there
a price guide to determine it's value.

Thanks in advance

Hi Charles,

Lionel HO is collectible, but it doesn't have the popularity that Lionel O gauge does. There are Greenberg Guide books to Lionel HO trains, but I believe the only one Kalmbach has in print is the 1970s Volume 2 book. The 1950s and 60s would be in the first book. You can go to the Kalmbach books website directly at kalmbachbooks.com or navigate through trains.com. Another way to get a sense of values is to search for Lionel HO on eBay. I don't recall of any sharing between Atlas and Lionel, and by the 1960s Lionel was in decline to the degree that the 1963 set could be left over stock from previous years.

Hello,
I am in the process of hooking up an old
Lionel HO No. 5741 - Steam Switcher, it is in very good condition and the box is not in bad shape either, can you help me out with some of the information that you have requested and can you fill me in on any pointers that you have come across?
Thank You,

Varney made engines and cars for Lionel in the 50's. I have a Lionel (Varney) double train set with a double loop track layout. I'm looking for parts but after 50+ years they are hard to come by. Would appreciate it if you come accross anyone who could help me on a parts issue.
