Folks:
I'm running TMCC on my layout but using a postwar KW to provide auxiliary power for my turnouts and signals with traditional bulbs (no LEDS) so the load is around 30 watts. The KW was last serviced in 1985 and appears to be operating OK - the plug and line cord are in good condition but am wondering how long a transformer should be in use without having a qualified Lionel tech go over it - wondering if there might be insulation or other problems inside the case.
Any thoughts / suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike
Since you are not using the variable voltage adjustment on a regular basis, the transformer should last for just about forever. As you noted, the thing to watch for is deterioration of the cord. If the laminations are loose and it buzzes, the internal insulation may fail eventually. But if it works quietly and with out excess heat it should be fine. I would recommend that neither it or any other toy train transformer should be left connected to house poser when someone is not in the room.
Mine's 50 years old. I did have to replace the power cord but aside from that it still works perfectly.
I agree with David 1005. If it were mine, I would be comfortable using it as is. However, never, ever leave the room with the transformer plugged in!
The Lionel XW transformers seem to have been built to run for a century or more. The parts that do wear out are not difficult to replace and spare parts are readily available.
Enjoy, they don't make 'em like this anymore. :)

I still use my 66 year old ZW w/o any problem.
As long as they're cared for and all the insulation is good, there is nothing inherently wrong with continued usage.

I run my layout with my great uncle's 1033, unsierviced ever, that he received in 1956 as part of outfit No. 1567W, used to be alongside of a 1940's Marx transformer rated for 25 watts, doubtful that any work was ever done to it.
I have 4 KWs. All in fine shape. If you want to check your KW, pull the handles off and unscrew the case. Unplug it first. Check the rollers for wear. If they are worn out so the roller holder is rubbing on the secondary coil, you need to replace them. I recommending oiling the whistle mechanism. One of my KWs had the whistle mechanism broken when I got it. I repaired it without buying any parts. Oil will make the whistle mechanism work much easier. Except for the power cord, I doubt you will find any bad wiring or insulation in the KW.
Transformers are the ORIGINAL SOLID STATE device. Except for the cord issues, and rollers if they have them, they will last forever! ( bulbs not counted)
I use a prewar step transformer from lionel for a prewar set st christmas I run at Christmas. the thing stiil works great even though it is from the late 20's. only changer the cord and polished the case with pledge to make the black paint look new.
