Disassembly of old engines.
Posted by WestCelt on Sunday, April 19, 2015 7:02 PM

Does anyone know of a video of how to disassemble a 675 or a 2026 steam engine.  I would like to repaint a couple of these but don't know how to disassemble them and I have been told the the 675 is tricky and I don't want to mess something up.  A video or PDF with a pic or 2 would be really nice.    Wink

You could check Olsen's Toy Trains library.  They have what look like Lionel service bullitins available for on line viewing.

A quick check in my Greenburg's repair manual indicates that the valve gear and steam chest must be removed before the motor can come out of the shell.  The motor is held in with a horizontal headless screw on the left side of the boiler and a vertical flat head screw from the top, roughly in line with the rear driver.

Pay attention to how it comes apart, so you can put it back together again.  Taking pictures each step along the way would be a good idea.

Good luck.

far as I know no videos but then I really haven't looked!  normally on 2046 there is a screw under front pilot wheels and either 2 under rear truck assemblies or a screw atop engine towards the back on boiler shell.

the 675 am not familiar with.  have you tried going to lionels web site and in parts area type in search for 2046 and 765 they might have a exploded diagram of where parts are located cant hurt to try!

I have two 675s, early and later, and I don't think they are any harder to take apart than any other Postwar steamer, with the exception of the 671/2020s.

I take the steamchest off first. This keeps from having to mess with the side rods. Take the screws for the eccentric rods off the boiler.Pull the boiler front off, and take the light off of the front. Take the top motor mount screw, and the front motor mount screw off, and the motor should pull out. Now mine haven't had the smoke units for a while now, so if yours does, you need to pay attention to how the smoke unit crank goes in.
